The news spread quickly in Devon that the English Fleet had defeated the Spanish Armada, sending the Spanish ships staggering up the coast of Scotland and breaking up across the Atlantic. Sir Francis Drake’s heroism was solidified as word of his calm demeanor in the face of attack circulated. While playing a game of bowls on The Hoe in Plymouth, he was told of the Spanish Armada’s entrance into the English Channel. His response was to finish his game first. He did and then he and Lord Admiral Howard finished the Spanish.

Submitted by RTslavekyra on Fri, 07/23/2010 - 02:52Catalina couldn’t get much news of the outside world, but because she was Spanish the servants uttered jeers and threats at her that implied that Spain was indeed preparing to attack England with its Armada. Would this change her position at Haverstoke’s castle? If the Spanish defeated the English and swarmed her coasts, would she be rescued and returned to Spain? The thought of that prospect weighed heavily upon her, for she still craved a coupling with Haverstoke.
